What could be better than pitching your tent in the green, green Sussex countryside and knowing you’re within 20 minutes’ drive of beaches? Well, perhaps all of that plus staying next to a cosy pub with delicious homemade pub classics and an excellent selection of beers, ciders and wines. That’s the set-up at Sussex Camping in the historic village of Arlington.
The peaceful one-acre camping field has a gate into the beer garden, where there is a play area and plenty of tables for alfresco dining. Inside the pub, there’s a designated area for groups with dogs that can be reserved (as Sussex Camping is handily dog-friendly) – and as guests, you’ll get a 10% discount on food and drinks, just what you need after a day of exploration.
This is a rural retreat, as you’ll see from the views of peaceful fields, and yet it’s a short drive to the beaches in Seaford (20 minutes, to be exact) and Eastbourne (25 minutes).
Walkers have plenty to sink their teeth (or rather, boots) into, including the Vanguard Way (half an hour’s walk away in Berwick village), and the Cuckmere Pilgrim Path (accessible from Arlington). Abbot’s Wood is 20 minutes’ walk away, and gorgeous Arlington Reservoir is 25 minutes’ walk away. Cyclists can head to the cycle path from Polegate (10 minutes’ drive) to Lewes too.
If one day you feel like a peaceful potter around instead, perhaps weaving your way in and out of eateries, Sussex Camping is a 10-minute drive from the market town of Hailsham, as well as the historic villages of Alfriston and Litlington.
